SKINCARE GUIDE

The Double Cleanse

The Double Cleanse

Double Cleansing was a life changing night time skincare routine for me. My skin had never been better since i introduced it to my skin! After nearly a year of religiously double cleansing every night, my skin has never felt or looked happier and it all started with the double cleanse.

Double cleansing is quite simply using two different types of cleansers, one after the other.

WHAT IS THE DOUBLE-CLEANSE AND WHY SHOULD DO IT?

As the name implies, double cleansing means washing your face twice: once with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, dirt, excess oil and dead skin, and again with a more “traditional” cleanser to further clean up the skin.

You need these two types of cleansers because there are actually two types of dirt your face encounters: oil-based dirt like makeup, and everything else like dust, sweat and dirt. Science tells us oil and water don’t mix, you need to fight like with like and use an oil-based cleanser (or micellar water) to remove oil-based dirt. The oil in the cleanser? It’s attracted to the fat in your sebaceous glands and the oil on your face in the form of makeup, sunscreen and pollution, meaning it’ll deep-clean without messing with the lipids and ceramides between skin cells aka it won’t leave your face feeling raw, dry and tight like a lot of traditional cleansers. Then that foaming cleanser in your 2nd cleanse comes in to get rid of any remaining surface-level residue and deeply purify skin.

Another upside to double cleansing? Having thoroughly cleansed skin also makes it much easier for whatever products you use after — serum, moisturizer, oils, etc. — to be absorbed and do their jobs.

WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD YOU USE?

If you are acne-prone, consider using a Micellar Water as your 1st Cleanse.

Micellar water is made up of micelles (tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules) suspended in soft water

If your skin type is more dry, consider using a cleansing balm or oil cleanser as your 1st Cleanse.

If you are opting for an oil based cleansing balm or cleanser, dispense the oil on your palm, rub both your hands to warm up the oil and then gently massage your face in circular motion for 60 seconds. This daily facial massage also helps promote blood flow to the area.

As stated above, you’ll need an oil-based cleanser and a low PH cleanser.

For your 2nd Cleanse, a mild low ph cleanser will get to work on the water-based dirt still lurking on your skin.

You can also include a konjac sponge to your 2nd cleanse for a more thorough ccleanse but is still gentle at the same time.

To use, simply soak the sponge for about 10 to 20 minutes (if it's your first time using it), allowing it to expand and soften. Give the sponge a squeeze to release excess water and then add your go-to cleanser. From there, use the sponge to gently scrub your face in circular motions.

HOW TO DO THE DOUBLE-CLEANSE?

Step 1

Warm 1-2 pumps of an oil or a pea-sized amount of a cleansing balm (or micellar water on a cotton pad or cleansing cloth) in your dry hands by rubbing your palms together for a few minutes.

Step 2

Once the oil cleanser/balm has melted, gently massage it into your skin (yes, makeup and all) for 30-60 seconds. Use slow, firm movements to work the oil/balm into your skin. I like to move my hands in circles from my neck upward, but it’s totally up to you. While you’re massaging, you’re also helping improve blood flow and activate your lymph nodes. PS — Don’t be alarmed when your mascara and eyeliner raccoons its way up to your eyebrows and down to your cheeks…it means the process is working. Most of the oil cleansers we have on Fickle Beauty will emulisfy when in contact with water so after your massage, wet your hands and massage and the oil should turn milky. Then rinse away all oil!

Step 3

Time for your next cleanse #2. Use a small amount of your chosen cleanser and massage into your skin for about 60 seconds using your fingertips. Really make sure you’re covering your entire face, throat and jaw line. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Step 4

Now that your skin is thoroughly cleansed - it is time to apply your essences, serums, moisturizers…whatever your heart desires. Do make sure you’re using something nourishing post-cleanse since this is prime time for your skin to receive active, good-for-you ingredients - always remember to se a moisturizer at least! Stand back and admire your thoroughly cleansed, deeply moisturized, happy and healthy skin!
