The Importance of a Gentle Cleanser

The Importance of a Gentle Cleanser

A facial cleanser is a skincare product used to remove make-up, dead skin cells, oil, dirt, and other types of pollutants from the skin, helping to keep pores clear and prevent skin conditions such as acne. Most of us area already doing it but are we doing it correctly?
In this article, I will share common mistakes people make when cleansing!
How To Wash Your Face Without Wrecking Your Skin!
You might think that your love of popping zits is your biggest skin problem, or the fact that you fall asleep constantly still wearing your makeup. But there's one surprising thing that nearly everyone does wrong in their skincare routine.

“Over-cleansing is one of the most common skincare mistakes people make.”

Doing so destroys our skin’s protective barrier and as a result, you would be more prone to skin issues like breakouts, rosacea, eczema, and even premature aging.
Here are 8 mistakes you should avoid!
Mistake #1 Washing your face more than 2 times a day
When it comes to cleansing your face, less is more. Realistically, you only need to wash your face once a day — twice at the most. Most of us when we sleep have a clean face from removing the day's grime or makeup off, so I tend to think that in the mornings you don't need a thorough face washing outside of your normal showering routine. If you experience specific issues that require attention in the morning it's fine to do it then, but I see more benefits at the end of the day when you return from work or go to bed. For those with more dry skin, washing your face with just water is sufficient in the morning.
Generally, a third washing is okay, but only if you’ve “just come from a sporting event where you sweat a lot, or if you're wearing a lot of makeup [ahead of going to the gym] and would prefer not to deal with that while working out. Apparently, overwashing your face is a thing — but your skin will likely let you know if you’re doing this via breakouts, dryness or irritation. When washing the face too much, you lose natural oils and fats in the skin, which technically will pull the skin cells apart allowing room for debris and bacteria to enter the skin, causing infections and inflammation.

Mistake #3 Using cleansers that aren't "Gentle" for your skin
The most important quality in a cleanser (if not all skincare) comes down to one word: “gentle”. A lot of times I have clients come in saying they have sensitive skin, but it's really because of all the things they're doing to it like over exfoliating, not using a moisturiser and over cleansing. Understand your skin type and need and pick a suitable cleanser accordingly. For those with dry skin, opt for a hydrating gel cleanser and for those with more oily skin, opt for a foaming cleanser. A lot of this is trial and error, and the best way to know if your face cleanser is working for you is if you don’t have any kind of irritation, redness or sense of over-drying. Your skin should NOT feel tight and dry after cleansing, if it does, it probably means the cleanser isn't suitable for you.
Mistake #4 Using an Exfoliator/Scrub daily as your cleanser
Exfoliating is the process of sloughing away dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, and it's something you don’t want to go overboard with. When it comes to physical exfoliators like scrubs with beads, peeling gels or even facial cleansing brushes, use it no more than 4 times a week. Some may only need to do so once or twice a week. It depends on your individual skin, so pay attention to how your skin responds, and you can determine how often it’s appropriate to exfoliate. And remember: Be gentle! p.s we prefer Chemical Exfoliants for that
Mistake #5 Skipping a Pre-Cleanse
You might just want to use a makeup wipe and call it a day, but that just gets rid of the exterior dirt and grime without cleaning the skin itself. The gentlest way to remove makeup? An oil-based cleansing balm. Work it in with dry fingers to massage the balm into the skin and break down waterproof formulas without tugging, then add water to emulsify and rinse.
Alternatively, for those who have tried cleansing oils and did not have a pleasant experience (break outs) a safer pre-cleanse option is to soak a cotton pad with micellar water and swipe across your face as your pre-cleanse before following up with a gentle cleanser.

Mistake #6 Rubbing your face dry with a towel
Pat, don’t rub. Rubbing can feel really good, but it tugs and pulls your skin, which puts your elastin at risk (potentially leading to wrinkles and sagging in the long run, and irritation in the short run). And don’t just grab the nearest hand towel, used or not. Friends don’t let friends spread bacteria—especially all over a nice, clean face. Designate a clean, soft towel to blot your fresh face.
Mistake #7 Not applying a Moisturiser
After cleansing, it is very important to seal in moisture with a Moisturiser. Some people apply a hydrating serum after cleansing without a moisturiser and that will risk TEWL - Transepidermal Water Loss which will lead to dehydrated skin and as a result, affect your skin's protective barrier which will lead to many skin issues like dry flakey skin, sensitive skin & even acne. To maximize absorption and help seal in moisture, apply moisturizers immediately after cleansing while skin is still damp. The same goes for serums and special treatment products. Waiting until your skin is completely dry will make it harder for the active ingredients to sink into your skin and can cause skin to feel greasy or tacky.
